QBE House and Content Insurance Purchased through ANZ

My first use of 3 year QBE product was due to water leakage from an Ensuite.
QBE investigation and outcome did wrap up under 30 days from logging a claim.
The claim escalated from the claim officer upon refusal of the claim identified poor workmanship and maintenance. QBE builders report stated NO insurer would not have been aware of the maintenance required.
I am baffled to understand when I purchase a non-new house build 11 years ago as to how I would be aware of poor workmanship undertaken if the work concealed under tiles or behind plaster walls. Even a standard home inspection would not be able to detect or raise these issues prior to the purchase of a house.
I purchased the QBE produce in good faith and now I am told QBE produce excluded poor workmanship.
This would then indicate that all non-new houses could potentially be not covered if the household has a QBE product when an incident takes place. How would a house owner know upon purchasing a house?

(WHAT IF I HAD A DEFECT IN MY HOME I WAS UNAWARE OF?
Insurers sometimes deny claims because they say that the damage was caused by a pre-existing defect in the property (for example, that the roof let water in because it was poorly constructed). Section 46 of the Insurance Contracts Act provides you with an argument against this. Section 46 states that if you were unaware of the defect when you entered the insurance contract (and a reasonable person in the circumstances would not have been aware of it) then the insurer cannot refuse the claim. Unfortunately, there has been a case decision that narrows the interpretation of this section. Get legal advice)

I would not recommend any person considering purchasing QBE product for a non-new house and seek an insurer who covers for unknown defects e.g AAMI or Budget Direct.
