Misleading Summary vs Actual Coverage
I am a repeat customer (Policy No. TWT65 024 005947) of The Wise Traveller and recently had a claim for a flight delay of just over six hours rejected, despite believing it was covered under my policy.
When I purchased the policy, the summary of benefits stated:
“Travel Delay – USD 150 per each continuous 6 hours of delay up to a maximum of USD 1,500.”
There was no indication in this summary that the delay benefit only applies to specific causes.
My delay was caused by “aircraft deployment reasons” as confirmed in writing by Malaysia Airlines. However, the insurer deemed this to fall outside the scope of coverage. As a customer, it is not realistic to expect passengers to obtain highly technical or detailed operational explanations from an airline, and the reason given could reasonably fall within mechanical or operational issues.
The key issue is not just the rejection itself, but how the policy is presented:
• The summary of benefits gives the clear impression that any delay of 6 hours or more is covered.
• The critical exclusions and conditions are only found in detailed policy wording, which is not highlighted or clearly referenced at the point of purchase. The detailed policy is only available on request.
• Customers are not informed that coverage depends heavily on the cause of delay, which is often vague, disputed, or difficult to evidence.
This review is not about expecting insurers to pay for everything, but about transparency. The summary of benefits should accurately reflect the real limitations of coverage so customers can make informed decisions.
