Review of The Wise Traveller Travel Insurance – Misleading Summary vs Actual Coverage
I am a repeat customer of The Wise Traveller and recently had a claim for a flight delay of just over six hours rejected, despite believing it was covered under my policy.
When I purchased the policy, the summary of benefits stated:
“Travel Delay – USD 150 per each continuous 6 hours of delay up to a maximum of USD 1,500.”
There was no indication in this summary that the delay benefit only applies to specific causes.
The rejection was later justified based on detailed policy wording stating that claims are only payable if the delay arises from:
• strike or industrial action
• adverse weather
• mechanical breakdown
• derangement or structural defect of the carrier
•
My delay was caused by “aircraft deployment reasons” as confirmed in writing by Malaysia Airlines. However, the insurer deemed this to fall outside the scope of coverage. As a customer, it is not realistic to expect passengers to obtain highly technical or detailed operational explanations from an airline, and the reason given could reasonably fall within mechanical or operational issues.
The key issue is not just the rejection itself, but how the policy is presented:
• The summary of benefits gives the clear impression that any delay of 6 hours or more is covered.
• The critical exclusions and conditions are only found in detailed policy wording, which is not highlighted or clearly referenced at the point of purchase.
• Customers are not informed that coverage depends heavily on the cause of delay, which is often vague, disputed, or difficult to evidence.
In practice, this means many customers may believe they are covered for flight delays when they are not, based on how the policy is marketed and summarised.
I would strongly advise:
• Existing customers to review the full policy wording very carefully before renewing
• Prospective customers to request and read the complete terms and conditions before purchasing, especially regarding delay and disruption coverage
This review is not about expecting insurers to pay for everything, but about transparency. The summary of benefits should accurately reflect the real limitations of coverage so customers can make informed decisions.
